ABOUT THE ARTIST

Henry Crews is a self-taught contemporary studio potter based in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he creates functional and decorative ceramics inspired by traditional wood-firing techniques. His work emphasizes rustic, organic and geometric aesthetics that celebrate the natural variability of form and flame, drawing from the rich history of American and Japanese wood-fired pottery traditions.

Crews slip casts his unique pieces using stoneware or porcelain clays, often in simple, elegant forms that consider usability while allowing the firing process to add layers of character. Crews’ pots exude a grounded, earthy feel: matte to glossy finishes in earthy tones— ochres, umbers, soft grays, and flashes of coppery orange— with textured surfaces that feel alive to the touch. His forms are understated and balanced, favoring quiet elegance. Pieces invite handling, whether for daily coffee rituals or as subtle display objects.

No two pieces are identical. Each tell a story about the kiln’s mood. Crews often posts process shots to his instagram of unloading exceptional pulls, noting how the fire paints his pots in way one cannot anticipate. Expect each piece to feel like a collaboration between maker, material, and the natural elements themselves.
